If your cat is meowing around the house for no reason, meowing or making noises while peeing or while cleaning themselves, peeing more frequently, or peeing anywhere other than the litter tray, then your cat might have a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), cystitus or the more complex condition called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). This can be painful and distressing to your cat, so it’s important to take your cat to the vet.

There are lots of possible causes of urinary tract infections, cystitus and Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease such as stones in the bladder or urethra, bladder inflammation, incontinence, injury, cancer or tumor, stress or congenital abnormalities.

Last night, Luna was wandering around the house meowing loudly. Luna meows sometimes but not as much as this. She was clearly distressed. She was also making a deep growling noise as she cleaned her bladder opening (urethra). And meows and moans while peeing. And for the last few mornings I have found wee on the floor in the kitchen.

Luna is four years old, which is the typical age for bladder problems to start. In combination with her symptoms, I am concerned so I took Luna to the vet this morning. He gave me a sample pot and a syringe. Somehow, I have to get a urine sample from Luna so the vet can see if there is an infection and target it with the right antibiotics.

I’m going to put puppy pads on the floor in the kitchen and hope that Luna uses them. When she does I will syringe up a sample from the pad.

In the meantime, I am giving her metacam, a common pain killer, for the pain and discomfort. I’m also going to start giving her specialist food that helps to reduce the symptoms and risk of infection. To ensure she gets enough fluid I put extra water in her wet food and removed the dry food.

Once we have the results back from the urine sample tests, we will know what to do next. I’m hoping its just an infection because that’s easy to treat with antibiotics.
